Pedigrees & genetics

Pedigree software that does the math, not just the boxes

Most apps draw a family tree. This one calculates the coefficient of inbreeding for any pairing, finds the common ancestors driving it, shows which founders your herd actually descends from, and tells you before you breed — not after.

Numbers behind the tree

A pedigree chart tells you who. Genetics tools tell you what it means.

Coefficient of inbreeding

Calculate COI for any real or hypothetical pairing, with the shared ancestors that produce it named — so you can see whether a number comes from one distant sire or several close ones.

Multi-generation pedigrees

Family trees with registration numbers, titles, and external ancestors you don't own — the full picture even when half the pedigree came from another farm.

Founder representation

See which foundation animals your herd actually traces to, and how heavily. The view that tells you whether your 'diverse' herd is quietly narrowing.

Relatedness across the herd

Compare any two animals, or scan the whole herd for genetic matches — useful when picking an outcross or checking a purchase before you commit.

Breed with intent

Linebreeding is a tool when it's measured and a mistake when it isn't.

Linebreeding analysis

Plan a line-bred pairing deliberately: see the concentration you're creating, which ancestor it concentrates on, and how it compares to alternatives.

Warnings before commitment

Every planned breeding carries a match rating and COI. A too-close cross gets flagged while it's still a plan — and thin pedigrees are called out as unknown rather than passed off as safe.

ADGA import

Pull registered pedigrees, genetic evaluations, and appraisal data in once, then rank your herd by merit instead of re-reading the registry site.

Traits & EPDs

Color, moonspots, blue eyes, and polled status for dairy and pet breeders; EPDs and performance data for meat operations selecting on growth.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about goat pedigrees and genetics.

Does it actually calculate inbreeding coefficients?

Yes — a real COI calculation from the pedigree data in your herd, not a rule of thumb. Any pairing, real or hypothetical, returns a coefficient along with the common ancestors responsible for it, so you can see whether the number comes from one distant animal or several close ones.

How accurate is the COI if my pedigrees are incomplete?

It's only as good as the pedigrees behind it — and that's the honest limitation of every COI tool. Missing ancestors can't reveal shared ones, so a shallow pedigree produces a number that reads lower than the true relatedness. Herd Manager flags when a pedigree is too thin to trust rather than presenting a falsely reassuring figure.

Can I import pedigrees from ADGA?

Yes. Import registered pedigrees, genetic evaluations, and linear appraisal data for registered dairy goats, then rank your herd by merit and plan complementary matings from it.

What about ancestors I don't own?

External ancestors are supported — record a sire or dam from another farm with registration details and they appear in pedigrees and COI calculations without cluttering your active herd list.
